Packaging is the process of enclosing and protecting a product for sale and distribution. It is also used to protect a product from various external factors like temperature and shock. Rapid industrialization has resulted in many developments in packaging. Different products require different kind of packaging. For e.g. packaging of a medicine will be quite different from the packaging of a grocery item. Fundamentally, packaging can be divided into three types or layers. First layer which envelops the product is called primary packaging. It is followed by the second layer which encloses the primary level. Tertiary is the final layer of packaging for warehousing and transporting. Apart from the layers, packaging also uses many different symbols to signify something about the product. For e.g. a red dot indicates non vegetarian food item while green dot indicates vegetarian food item. Similarly, inflammable and dangerous have special information on them as per international or rule of the country. Many standardized symbols are also used to communicate handling procedures.
