The history of “Signage” dates back to the middle ages where visual graphic representations were used to convey information as a large percentage of the population was illiterate. Hence, the pictures or symbols used in the signage helped the people to identify pubs from coffee houses. The signage may or may not contain written information and these were typically put up on streets or outside buildings. In modern times, the signage is used for several purposes ranging from information of the places, directions to safety and regulatory instructions of the traffic signs. Organizations are increasingly using the signage for brand promotions and recognition. For example a yellow curvy “M” by the road is immediately recognized as “McDonalds” for the passerby looking for a place to eat. This ability of signage to be easily recognized is aptly utilized by many organizations, this in turn fueled the technology of signage from carved wood signage to LEDs (Light emitting diodes); and in terms of innovation it moved from a “banner sign” to “Skywriting” (smoke of aircraft).
