Sri Lanka or the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island country located in southern part of the Asian Continent. The country lies between 5 deg and 10 deg N latitudes and 79 deg and 82 deg E. It is spread out over an area 65, 610 sq km. The country has two official languages namely, Sinhala and Tamil. The Sinhalese form the majority of the people here. Buddhism is the predominant religion of the land. The Sri Lankan Rupee is the local currency. Earlier known as Ceylon, this beautiful land is bordered by the Indian Ocean, the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. The capital of the country is Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte. The country has a semi-presidential form of Government. The President is the Head of the State. He also heads the Armed Forces of the country and the Government. The country enjoys a tropical and warm type of climate making it inviting for the tourists. The picturesque beauty of the land with abundant tropical forests, amazing landscapes and golden sandy beaches is the reason why it is known as “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. The country is known for its aromatic tea, coconut, rubber, coffee and spices like cinnamon. Sri Lanka is a member of several international organizations like the UN (United Nations), SAARC, G77 and the Commonwealth of Nations.
