The population of the land is approximately 13,276,517. It shares its borders with Mexico, Belize, Honduras, the Carribean and El Salvador. It is a representative democracy. Guatemala de la Asuncion or Guatemala city is the capital of the country. The country is divided into 22 departments which is further sub-divided into 332 municipalities. Christianity is the predominant religion with approximately 60% of the population being Catholics.
